Iran Press - The deputy speaker of the Iranian parliament (Majlis ), Dr. Pezeshkian, speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony to praise all those involved in drafting and endorsement of a new piece of legislation -- Supporting the Rights of Mentally and Physically Handicapped Act - said: "The new legislation in support of the rights of the mentally and physically handicapped completely conforms with all relevant international standards in this area".

Asked what services have been offered to the physically and mentally handicapped, particularly with regards to training and physiotherapy, and whether such services conform to international standards, Dr. Pezeshkian added:  "The draft legislation which was drawn up and presented by the government to the parliament (Majlis) , and was studied closely and amended by a special working group of parliamentarians from the Majlis, conforms totally with international conventions and standards, and is also in-line with Islamic teachings and principles."

Elsewhere in his remarks Pezeshkian said:  "Those who are mentally and physically handicapped deserve our full support, and all of us, regardless of our employment or office  or post, as human beings, have a responsibility towards each other, and those who are handicapped have every right to expect equal rights and equal facilities to those who are able-bodied".
