More than 500 attacks on the election day in Afghanistan

Iran Press/Asia: Interior Minister Masud Andarabi reported five deaths and 37 civilians injured in different attacks attributed to the Taliban, which called for preventing the holding of the elections due to what they deemed fraud, Iran Press reported.

However, local news agency Pajhwok reported 32 deaths and 123 injured in 113 attacks, while Khaama Press reported that Afghan military forces have killed 34 Taliban members.

At the end of the day, the Taliban claimed 531 attacks throughout the country.

In recent weeks, violence has increased since US President Donald Trump declared that negotiations with the Taliban to try to end 18 years of conflict were 'dead.' The Taliban refuses to establish direct talks with the government, which they consider a 'puppet' of Washington until all foreign troops withdraw from Afghan soil

 Yesterday, Sep 28, Polling centers in cities and villages opened at 7:00 a.m. local time (0230 GMT) and continued till 5:00 pm local time (1230 GMT) in the country's 34 provinces, election commission officials said.

The voting process initially was to end at 3:00 pm local time but extended for two more hours to enable the voters to use their franchise, head of the election commission Hawa Alam Nuristani told reporters.

Preliminary results are scheduled for October 19 and final results on November 7, with the possibility of a second-round if none of the candidates receives over 50 percent of the vote. Vying for the presidency are 15 candidates, including current President Ashraf Ghani, the current Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, and former prime minister (1992-1996) and Mujahideen leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.
