Iran Press/ Europe: Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, in an interview with Russia 1 TV stated on Sunday that the discussions between Russia and the Taliban are in line with the United Nations Security Council's resolutions.
Zakharova noted that since the Taliban movement is a part of the inter-Afghanistan dialogue, according to a UN Security Council resolution of March 2020, Russia speaking to the organization is merely "implementing the resolution in practice." However, she also reaffirmed the country's overall stance on the Taliban, saying that it not only doesn't support that Taliban by it "reaffirms its determination in the fight against international terrorism and rejection of any terrorist activity."
Earlier, Russian officials were critical of the United States' actions in Afghanistan, adding that its military mission in the country has failed. Meanwhile, the Taliban and the Afghan government held peace talks yesterday, with the chance of a ceasefire increasing over the past few days.
In recent weeks, the civil war in Afghanistan has intensified with Taliban attacks on government-controlled regions, making the situation in Afghanistan worse.
Various parts of Afghanistan have been the scene of intense clashes between Taliban elements and government forces in recent weeks.
