Iran Press/ Asia: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in 10 provinces devastated by two earthquakes.
Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said late on Tuesday that 5,894 people had been killed and 34,810 injured in Türkiye, as search operations continued in freezing winter temperatures, approaching 48 hours since the first major quake.
In Syria, the state news agency SANA reported that at least 812 people had been killed and 1,449 injured in government-controlled areas. The White Helmets organization coordinating rescue efforts in rebel-held territory said at least 1,220 people were killed and 2,600 injured.
Monday's magnitude 7.8 quake, followed hours later by a second one almost as powerful, toppled thousands of buildings including hospitals, schools, and apartment blocks.
The quake, which was centered in Türkiye’s southeastern province of Kahramanmaras, sent residents of Damascus and Beirut rushing into the street and was felt as far away as Cairo.
