Syrian president, Bashar al-Asad and his wife, Asma, visited the city of Al-Sawda, in the province of Tartus in west of the country, and met with the people in the local church.

Iran PressMiddle East: According to an Iran Press report, the Syrian president visits a church or two during the Christmas festivities every year, usually in Damascus or Aleppo, but this year has been different and Syrian president traveled to Western province of Tartus to visit Syrian Christians.

Some social media in Syria have released pictures of Syrian president and his wife, Asma, meeting people in a church, greeting them and congratulating the new year.

The wife of Bashar al-Assad attended the event in a headscarf after undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The first lady herself is combating cancer after being diagnosed with the disease back in August. Damascus acknowledged that she had started treatment for the early stages of breast cancer.

It is estimated that between 6% to 10% of the Syrian population is Christian.
