Iran press/ Asia: The protesting students thronged the streets of South Korea's capital, Seoul, on Friday, gathering near the compound of the US ambassador to South Korea.
The protesters shouted, "Stop interfering with our domestic affairs" and chanted "Get out" and "We don’t need US troops", before being removed by police, Reuters reported.
Seoul Police arrested at least 19 South Korean university students as they were scaling the walls of the official compound of the US ambassador to Korea, Harry Harris.
Meanwhile, other protesting students were carrying placards which read: "Leave this land, Harris."
A US State Department spokesperson, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the protesters' scaling the wall of the ambassador's residence, and pointing out that this is the second attempted break-in at the ambassador’s residence in the past 14 months.
The US has stationed 28,500 forces in South Korea and has sharply increased the cost of their keeping in the Asian country.
In February, according to CBS, South Korea agreed to pay about 1 trillion won -- $880 million -- toward the troops for 2019, an 8.2% increase from 2018. A new round of talks is expected to be held next week in Hawaii.
