Iranian President Hassan Rouhani (R) and Iraqi President Barham Salih (L)

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has welcomed the decision of Iraq's Parliament demanding the exit of US forces from the Arab country taken on Sunday in the wake of the assassination of the top Iranian military officials, according to President Office's website.

He made the remarks in a telephone conversation with Iraqi President Barham Salih in which Rouhani said funeral processions held in Iraqi cities of Najaf, Karbala and Baghdad to commemorate martyred General Qasem Soleimani and deputy of popular Hashd al-Shaabi forces were soothing the Iranian nation's sorrows.

Rouhani said Iran and Iraq shall expand their relations in a bid to encounter the US's aggressive and interventionist actions.

"The people and government of Iran will continue to support the sovereignty of Iraq," he said expressing the hope that Iran's neighboring Arab nation will witness further security, stability and national solidarity.

He also hailed the counter-terrorism command of martyr Soleimani when he defended the Iraqi city of Erbil against the invasion of ISIS terrorists and repelled their attack.

The Iraqi president on his part said he shared the deep sorrow over assassination of General Soleimani felt by the two nations of Iran and Iraq and said that their friendship and solidarity will play a crucial role in establishing security in the region.

"Stability and tranquility are the priorities of the Iraqi and Iranian peoples and expansion of bilateral relations is a step in this regard," Salih was quoted saying.
