The Senate of Pakistan’s Standing Committee on Finance, chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwala, has asked Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and the federal cabinet to quickly address the issue of 600 commercial trucks stranded at the Pakistan-Iran border.

Why it matters:

Iran and Pakistan, connected by religious, cultural, and social values, have consistently worked to strengthen their ties and promote mutual trade through trade delegations and exhibitions. However, the recent stoppage of commercial trucks at the border is causing concerns for traders, drivers, and the market, potentially hindering the progress in bilateral trade.

What they're saying:

Senator Saleem Mandviwala: "While border trade between Pakistan and Iran continues, the complex SRO issued by Pakistan's Ministry of Commerce is threatening to halt this trade entirely."

Senator Shibli Faraz: "Pakistan's bureaucracy is not working to facilitate but to create obstacles. Here is a businessman whose 600 trucks have been stuck for so many days."

Senator Anusha Rehman: "It is not mentioned anywhere that customs officials ask for the original form of the goods."
