In an interview with Iran Press in Berlin, the former foreign minister, Kamal Kharrazi , talked of his meetings with German officials, including a meeting on Tuesday with an aide to German foreign minister, Heiko Maas, and another meeting with the head of the Bundestag's foreign policy commission. The Bundestag is the German federal parliament.
Kharrazi emphasized that there is a general consensus among German politicians and within the German government that the Iran nucleaer deal (JCPOA ) needs to be preserved.
He added: "The political will to safeguard the JCPOA exists in Germany, but the crucial point is how to translate this political will into practical steps to guarantee Iran's national interests and to safeguard the nuclear deal , which is in the interests of everyone".
Elsewhere in his remarks, Kharrazi said: "Negotiations are currently underway between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the E.U. to workout mechanisms to guarantee Iran's interests as part of the nuclear deal. The much-anticipated 'European package of incentives' is really a collection of these mechanisms which are suppose to guarantee Iran's interests within the JCPOA. It remains to be seen whether the E.U. can workout sufficiently robust mechanisms to make it worthwhile for Iran to remain within the JCPOA".
The former foreign minister, and head of Iran's Foreign Policy Strategic Council, Kamal Kharrazi , is currently visiting Germany to attend an international conference.
