China (IP) - Iran's Ambassador to China met with the Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and exchanged views about coordination with the international body.

Iran press/ Asia: Meeting with SCO head Zhang Ming, Iran's envoy Mohsen Bakhtiyar talked about the country's active participation in the SCO and strengthening economic cooperation with the eight member countries, including China.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian also had a telephone conversation with the Zhang on Friday, discussing Iran's participation in the organization's upcoming meeting.

Iran's final membership will provide a new capacity to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Amir-Abdollahian told the SCO head.

Iran became an observer in the SCO back in 2005. the country's application to become a full member was accepted in 2021. 

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a security and trade cooperation organization for Eurasian states. It was founded by Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan in 2001.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday that Iran would be admitted to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as a full member on the 4th of July, further strengthening the Islamic Republic’s ties to China and Russia.
