Iran, South Africa poised to boost defense cooperation

Iran's deputy minister of Defense and Chief of Defense Force Staff of South Africa have called for long-term defense cooperation between the two countries, in a meeting which was held in Tehran on Sunday.

Iran Press/Africa: Stressing that the Islamic Republic of Iran holds South Africa in a special place in the country's foreign policy and diplomacy, General Mohammad Ahadi, said that Iranian people always respect Nelson Mandela and his peaceful struggle against racial discrimination.

Referring to the US hostile and illegal moves, he said that Washington, in its latest blatant enmity against Iranian people, designated Iran’s elite Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a foreign terrorist organization, Mehrnews reported.

General Ahadi added that the US has no intention to stop its overt and covert support of terrorists in the region and across the wider world.

He also emphasized the continuation of military consultations and interactions between the armed forces of the two countries, as well as the development of defence cooperation between the two sides to achieve a long-term and strategic engagement.

On 15 April, South African envoy to Tehran Vika Mazwi Khumalo said that his country is keen on enhanced economic cooperation with Iran and carrying out joint investment projects in various fields.

Despite the sanctions renewed in the past year, South Africa has been among the countries that have kept their investments in Iran and proceeded with doing business with Iran. 101/211/201
