Tehran (IP) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has officially opened the phase-1 of Tehran-North Freeway.

Iran Press/Iran news: While officially inaugurating the freeway and declaring it open for public use, President Rouhani said: "We unveil Phase 1 of Tehran-North Freeway, which is the manifestation of Iranian engineering skills and expertise”.

The President was also briefed by the engineers of the project on the construction process and the advantages of using it.

The 32-kilometer-long Tehran-North freeway has cost 10 trillion Toumans.

According to the people in charge of the project, Tehran-North Freeway has been built to the highest standards and is considered to be the safest road in the country and a unique Freeway in West Asia.

The existence of high standard long tunnels, together with advanced jet fan ventilation system, access tunnels, special bridges, and concrete cladding are among the main features of the freeway.

With this phase of the freeway starting operation, the current Tehran-Karaj-Chalus route will become approximately 60 km shorter.

The Tehran-North Freeway is perhaps one of the most notorious projects in Iran, as it is above 20 years under the construction. It also is a mega project consists of four phases spanning 121 km in total.

The phases 2 and 3 of the freeway, with 30 percent of physical development, are still under construction. These two phases pass through mountainous terrain, are not easily accessible and will take longer to complete.

The phase -4, which is 20 kilometers long and connects Marzanabad in Kelardasht District to Chalous (both in Mazandaran), was inaugurated in March 2014.
