Iran Press/ Europe: Iran's ambassador at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, Esmaeil Baghaei Hamaneh, referred to a toughening of US sanctions against Iran, describing the sanctions as callous and cruel, sitting uncomfortably alongside US claims about human rights. Baghaei Hamaneh said in view of the sanctions, US claims about the human rights of the Iranian people are totally disingenuous and misleading.
Speaking on Monday at the 43rd meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Baghaei Hamaneh criticized the politicized and biased approach of some countries towards human rights in Iran and said exploiting human rights for political purposes and using human rights as an instrument to apply political pressure is a great disservice to the UN Human Rights Council. Iran's representative at the UN in Geneva said such abuse of human rights should be stopped forthwith.
Turning to the assassination of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in a terror attack last January, Baghaei Hamaneh said the assassinated General had a solid track record of fighting Daesh (or ISIS) terrorists and defending human rights.
He added: "Millions of people had been saved from the scourge of Daesh (ISIS) terrorism because of Martyr Soleimani's efforts. The peoples of Iraq and Syria regained their lost human rights when efforts of top General Qassem Soleimani paid off and Daesh terrorists were defeated in both countries."
