Iran Press/America: Speaking on Monday afternoon at the 74th General Assembly session on reform and restructuring of the Security Council, Majid Takht-Ravanchi said: "The primary responsibility for keeping the world safe and secure lies with the UN Security Council, but a quick glance at its past and present performance tells us that the Security Council has been woefully unable to carry out this responsibility. Our expectations from the UN Security Council are much more, and the Council is unable to meet its responsibility."
Takht-Ravanchi added: "On many issues, the Security Council has been inactive, powerless, and totally useless. In some specific cases, the Council has acted effectively and with authority, but at the same time, the Security Council has been used as a political instrument or tool by some permanent members. Sadly, this abuse of power has gone on for many years."
Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations added: "Thus the legitimacy and the credibility of the Security Council has been brought into question. The only standard for measuring the performance and effectiveness of the Security Council is the principles of justice and international law."
Takht-Ravanchi pointedly added: "In order to uphold justice and the rule of law, and to promote multilateralism, restructuring of the UN Security Council is not just an option, it is an absolute necessity!"
