Iran Press/ Europe: Mehdi Aliabadi, who spoke at a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on "promotion of truth, justice, reparation, and guarantees of non-recurrence," referred to the crimes committed against the Iranian nation during the imposed war with the support and assistance of citizens and companies of some European countries and the United States in equipping Saddam's army with chemical weapons, calling on these countries to live up to their international obligations to prosecute the perpetrators of these crimes and to compensate the victims.
Referring to the two decades of Afghanistan occupation by the United States and its allies, Iran's Deputy Representative to the UN called for an investigation into the atrocities committed by the occupiers during these twenty years in gross violation of human rights and international humanitarian law.
Aliabadi stressed: "The United States and its military and allies are responsible for these crimes. The fact that the United States has left Afghanistan after two decades of occupation and military intervention should not undermine the process of investigating and prosecuting the crimes committed."
At the meeting, held during the 48th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation, and guarantees of non-recurrence, Fabián Salvioli, presented his report on accountability with a view to the prosecution and punishment of gross violations of human rights and serious violations of international humanitarian law in the context of transitional justice processes. The report examined the scope of the legal obligation to prosecute and punish such violations, as well as the constraints, gaps, and opportunities encountered in the implementation of this obligation in countries undergoing transitional justice processes.
Various countries also expressed their views in this regard, especially the need for impunity for crimes committed in the past. The main goal is not to impunity for crimes committed in the past and to prevent their recurrence in the future.
