Tehran(IP)-The International Conference on Combating Sand and Dust Storms (SDSs) kicked off in Tehran on Saturday.

Iran PressIran news: The conference is being chaired by the Head of Iran's Department of Environment Ali Salajegheh, with the presence of President Ebrahim Raisi.

The conference will continue until September 10, representatives from 50 countries and 15 international institutions is participated by the international summit, and a large number of experts, university professors and representatives of executive, research and educational institutions.

Iranian DoE head urges world to find solution to drought

Delivering a speech at the conference, Ali Salajegheh said that in the last 50 years, more than 50% of climate events have been related to drought, with more than 45% of deaths are caused by drought, hazards in developing countries.

Salajegheh said since 2000, the droughts and their effects have enhanced up to 30 percent, and from 1970 to 2020, they have imposed over $124 billion in damage on the world.

 

He estimated that over 700 million people will have migrated from their homelands due to the droughts by 2030. 

The Iranian top environment official said currently, about 3.2 billion people are dealing with water shortage in the world, the number of whom will reach about 5 billion by 2050, such that they will suffer one month a year from water shortage.
