Iran Press / Europe: Protesters started to assemble by the Champs Elysees and the Invalides esplanade near the Assemblee Nationale lower house of parliament and the Eiffel Tower, with their numbers expected to increase during the day, according to a Reuters report.
The Yellow Vest movement began in mid-November 2018 as a protest against a proposed hike in fuel costs. It has since grown to encompass wider discontent among French people over living standards and Macron’s policies. At its peak, more than 280,000 people gathered to protest on the Champs-Elysees on November 17.
The movement also spread to Belgium and the Netherlands in a short time.
December's protests brought some of the worst violence seen in decades in Paris, as rioters burned cars and damaged shops and businesses.
Protests so far this month have not had the same level of trouble, although images of a former French boxing champion punching and kicking police during a demonstration this month in Paris shocked much of France.
President Macron has launched a series of national debates to help quell the mood of public discontent and restore his standing in the polls.
