Shia Muslims have special ceremonies during the first ten days of the month of Muharram to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his 72 loyal companions.
Yazd is a religious tourist hub during the days of Muharram due to its various historical buildings, mosques, Takias, and displays of Iranian motifs and culture.
The mourning was held in the presence of the lovers and followers of Imam Hussein (AS) in a spiritual atmosphere.
Yazdi people have special mourning rituals; they recite elegies and beat their chests rhythmically, three-beat, four-beat, five-beat, six-beat.
Yazd always attracts the special attention of foreigners due to its unique Muharram rituals. Hundreds of foreign tourists go to Yazd to watch yearly Muharram mourning rituals.
The elegies are recited with an epic rhythm, with beautiful content, in which many are interested, both from within and outside the country.
A Russian visitor from St. Petersburg told Iran Press: "It's a very interesting ritual; the people of Yazd are calm and kind."
He said he is a historian and that he knew Imam Hussein (AS) and agreed with him.
A woman from Croatia told Iran Press: "We were so excited to know about the traditions here; I'm of the advocates of the places where traditions and customs are important."
She added the poems cited, the way people prayed and beat their chests, and their emotions were magnificent and spectacular.
Elina from Italy said it was the first time she had visited Iran and seen Muharram mourning rituals and the Iranian culture, which she said was very admirable.
"Rituals full of emotions and many people who are religious; I respect this belief very much," she expressed her feelings.
Still, a visitor from Spain's Barcelona told Iran Press: "We came to Iran to get familiar with the customs here; the real face of the country is the opposite of what we were told about."
The Spanish visitor said that real emotions were seen in the Iranian society; the people adhere wholeheartedly to their religion and traditions.
"The feeling and companionship of the people has affected us; we thank the Iranians for accepting us," the visitor added.
