At least 16 people were killed and over 20 went missing due to landslides and heavy rainfall in Yemen’s Al Mahwit province, Al Masirah television reported, citing local authorities.

Iran Press/West Asia: On Thursday, civil defense units discovered 16 bodies in the Malhan district of Al Mahwit province, which had been buried by landslides the day before. A total of 22 people are still reported missing, according to a local official.

The previous death toll had stood at seven. Earlier this month, flash floods caused by heavy rains swept through Al Mahwit and the neighboring province of Hudaydah, which is also controlled by the Houthis.

The situation in Yemen has been exacerbated by ongoing humanitarian crises and infrastructure challenges due to years of conflict. The recent heavy rains have led to significant flooding, affecting thousands of residents and causing extensive damage to homes and public facilities.

In addition to the casualties, reports indicate that numerous homes have been destroyed or severely damaged, and many families have been displaced. Humanitarian organizations are calling for urgent assistance to address the needs of those affected by the floods, which have compounded the already dire humanitarian situation in the country.

According to the United Nations, Yemen has faced severe flooding since July, impacting over 250,000 people and leading to dozens of fatalities. The ongoing conflict, coupled with the effects of climate change, has made Yemen particularly vulnerable to such disasters, further complicating relief efforts.

As the situation develops, local authorities and humanitarian agencies are working to provide aid and support to those affected, while also addressing the underlying issues that have contributed to the country's vulnerability to natural disasters.
