Why it matters:
Israel has a long history of reneging on its agreements with the Palestinians, and many observers remain skeptical that this time will be any different. All eyes are on the Palestinian prisoners boarding Red Cross buses to return to their families and loved ones.
Palestinian officials have expressed concern that many of them may be in poor health, as it is well known that Palestinians are often mistreated and tortured in Israeli prisons.
Driving the news:
The Israeli regime will release 1,700 Palestinians imprisoned by the Israeli army in Gaza after October 7, 2023. Additionally, 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli jails will be freed. In total, 2,000 Palestinian prisoners are set to be released under the so-called Gaza "peace" agreement.
On the ground:
According to Israeli media, the first group of detainees will leave the Netzarim area at 8 a.m., while the second group will be transferred from Khan Yunis and the camps in the central area at 10 a.m.
The Israeli Prison Service claimed that it has completed its logistical preparations for the release of Palestinian prisoners, including several prisoners serving life sentences. Families of the prisoners have been instructed to be ready to accompany their loved ones to the first meeting point at the Riim Reception Complex.
Go Deeper:
With Gaza almost destroyed and more than 67,000 Palestinians killed during Israel's two-year genocidal war, the so-called peace agreement remains extremely fragile. It could easily unravel, particularly over the thorny questions of who will govern Gaza and whether Hamas will disarm.
