Public opinion in the United States is shifting, with new polls showing declining support for the Israeli regime and increasing sympathy for Palestinians, especially among younger voters.

Why it matters:

The shift in the U.S. public opinion comes amid Trump’s increasingly direct involvement in the Gaza conflict.

The big picture:

A new national poll released on Tuesday indicates that 40 percent of registered U.S. voters believe Israel is intentionally killing civilians in  Gaza. The findings highlight growing concerns over civilian casualties and the broader humanitarian toll of the military campaign.

What to know:

The poll was conducted between September 22-27, before Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced their so-called "20-point  Gaza peace plan". The plan calls for a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip, the disarmament of Hamas, the release of all remaining Israeli captives in Gaza, and a redevelopment of the territory, which has been destroyed after nearly two years of war.

Netanyahu warned Hamas that Israel would press forward with the war in Gaza if the group rejected the plan or accepted it but then failed to meet its conditions.

Key points:

  • 40% of U.S. voters believe Israel is intentionally killing civilians.
  • 62% believe Israel is not taking adequate precautions to avoid civilian casualties.
  • 59% want Israel to halt its military campaign, regardless of Hamas's status.
  • 58% support ending the campaign even if not all Israeli captives are released.
