Iranians across the country commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain, his family, and his companions through Ashura rituals.

In Iran, mourning ceremonies for Imam Hussain begin on the first day of Muharram and reach their climax at noon on Ashura, when Imam Hussain and his companions were martyred at the battle of Karbala.

The Ashura mourning ceremonies continue until evening when Iranians hold candle vigils.
