US President Joe Biden has threatened to impose sanctions on Myanmar following a military coup in that country and the arrest of senior government officials, including Aung San Suu Kyi.

Iran PressAmerica: US President Joe Biden issued a statement saying that the international community should unite to put pressure on the Myanmar army to hand over power immediately.

The US president went on to call on the international community to press for the release of activists and detained officials, to lift communication restrictions and to refrain from violence against civilians.

Biden added that the military takeover of Myanmar, the arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi and other civilian officials, and the declaration of a state of national emergency are a direct attack on the transfer of democracy and the rule of law.

Also, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called for the immediate release of members of the Myanmar government.

In the early hours of the Monday morning, Myanmar Army arrested Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the ruling National Democratic Union party, and several other party leaders, including President Win Myint.

Myanmar's National Unity Party, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, claimed victory in the by-elections three months ago with about 83 percent of the vote, but the military has nullified the election results by accusing the ruling party of rigging the election.

The Myanmar military coup has quickly met with regional and international condemnations. 219
