Air pollution in Iran sends hundreds to hospitals

Head of Iran’s Emergency Medical Services announced the arrival of hundreds of people to pre-hospital and in-hospital centers as a result of rising air pollution.

Iran Press/Iran news: Head of Iran's Emergency Medical Services Pir-Hossein Kolivand said: "From December 24 to December 29, 12838 people referred to pre-hospital and hospital centers due to the high concentration of air pollutants."

Heavy air pollution on Friday forced the Iranian authorities to close kindergartens, schools, and universities in a number of cities including the capital, Iran Press reported.

Two football matches in Iran Professional League were postponed after the Iranian capital was cloaked in dangerously high levels of air pollution.

Air pollution was the cause of nearly 30,000 deaths per year in Iranian cities.

Each winter, Iran's sprawling capital suffers some of the worst pollutions in the world through thermal inversion -- a phenomenon that traps hazardous air over the city.
