Wildfires continued to burn in Shasta County in Northern California, consuming an area known locally as Buckhorn Ridge, although residents in a number of areas of the county were allowed back to their properties.
While trees shot up in flames as clouds of smoke billowed around them alongside the 299 freeway around Buckhorn Ridge, areas such as Summit City, Buckeye, Happy Valley and Montgomery Ranch were deemed safe for residents to return to under the caveat that they remain vigilant.
Speaking earlier in the day, public information officer Gabriel Lauderdale from Calfire, said, "The northwestern area of the fire towards the area of Lewiston we saw some increased winds overnight and the fire that they're working at containing along the county line towards Shasta County and Trinity County but we did see some spot fires and slop overs across that line. Crews are looking at putting in a dozer line along that county road and try and pick up any spots that may jump that line and hold that fire to the county line."
The size of the fire was estimated as being 110,154 acres with a 27% containment rate and an unknown expected full containment time.
So far, 884 residential structures have been destroyed. According to the release, 3,607 personnel are working on extinguishing the fires.
The show of gratefulness around the community of Redding and Shasta County is obvious. Specifically around the fire stations and temporary base camps, locals have posted signs expressing their gratitude towards the people putting their lives at risk.
