Iran press/Iran news: The Forum on Improving the Livelihood of Afghan Refugees started with a speech by South Korea's ambassador to Iran Ryu Jeong Hyun, who thanked the Iranian government for its support and providing assistance to Afghan refugees, and for improving their livelihood, reported Iran press.
Asked why the South Korean government wants to get involved in the Afghan refugee problem, the South Korean ambassador said: "After the Korean war of 1950 -1953, South Korea was a poor country, but now South Korea wants to repay the international community for the help it received after the Korean war.
"That is why South Korea wants to help the Afghan refugees' problem", he said. Another speaker at the Forum was Lvo Freijsen, UNHCR representative in Iran, who said Iran and Pakistan bear the brunt of the Afghan Refugee crisis, and in terms of the number of refugees hosted are jointly ranked second in the world. He thanked Iranian entrepreneurs and businessmen for their efforts to help Afghan refugees by providing them with employment and sustainable jobs.
Another speaker at the Forum was Mahmoudi, the director general of the bureau for foreign immigrants and refugees in Tehran. Mahmoudi said, the main reason for our gathering here is assist and improve the lives of Afghan refugees.
He concluded that the international organisations should know that US sanctions against Iran have affecetd helping refugees process and US mustn't impose these sanctions in humanitarian activities such as this.
