Isfahan (IP) – Tens of thousands of mourners gathered in the central city of Isfahan to pay their final respects to Brigadier General Abbas Nilforoushan, a former senior commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), who was recently martyred in an Israeli strike on Lebanon.

Iran PressIran news: The funeral ceremony on Thursday saw thousands of black-clad mourners carrying Martyr Nilforoushan's coffin, which was draped in the Iranian national flag, through the main streets of Isfahan. The crowd waved flags of Iran, Palestine, and the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, chanting slogans such as "Death to Israel" and "Death to America" in solidarity with the people of Gaza and Lebanon, and in support of the resistance front.

General Nilforoushan was laid to rest in Isfahan’s Golestan Shohada cemetery. He was martyred in an Israeli airstrike that targeted residential buildings in Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh on September 27, alongside Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

Following the attack, Nilforoushan’s body was taken from Beirut to the holy Iraqi cities of Karbala and Najaf. His funeral prayers were led by a representative of Iraq's top cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. The body was then transferred to Tehran on Tuesday and to Mashhad on Wednesday, where mourners and Iranian officials paid their respects.

Earlier on Friday, the IRGC confirmed the discovery of Nilforoushan’s body, describing him as one of Iran’s “senior advisors” and a “stalwart” of the Islamic Republic. In a statement, they condemned the “ruthless and bloodthirsty Zionist regime’s atrocity.”

In response to the assassination of General Nilforoushan, Hezbollah’s Sayed Nasrallah, and Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh, Iran launched a significant retaliatory strike on October 1. Dubbed Operation True Promise II, the strike saw 200 ballistic missiles launched at Israeli military and intelligence bases throughout the occupied Palestinian territories. The operation targeted key sites, including the headquarters of Mossad, the Nevatim airbase that houses F-35 warplanes, and the Hatzerim base, involved in Sayyed Nasrallah’s assassination.
