JCPOA should not be reviewed: Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister stated in an interview with IRIB reporters on Saturday that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action should not be reviewed.

Iran PressEurope: "We do not support the position of countries that want to raise issues other than the nuclear issue," said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, while supporting Iran's position in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov in an interview with IRIB reporters on Saturday in a webinar said: "Iran's position is tactful and we support it. We do not support the positions of countries that want to raise issues other than the nuclear issue in JCPOA. The JCPOA should not be reviewed."

He also blamed the United States for the current situation.

"Russia flatly rejects any attempts of imposing illegitimate unilateral restrictions and also applying them extraterritorially, which it signaled "quite clearly" after the United States pulled out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action under the Iranian nuclear program," Lavrov said.

"We do not just refuse to recognize unilateral sanctions, but support Iran with specific measures," he added.

Lavrov highlighted: "The United States had in fact punished Iran for Washington's failure to fulfill its obligations. We believe that the US position on JCPOA is unconstructive. I mean there are people in the American political apparatus who support the destruction of JCPOA and believe that any agreement with Iran should be avoided. There are forces in the United States that want to destroy JCPOA."

He stressed: "JCPOA capacities should be used and the balance of Iran's obligations and interests in this international agreement should be observed. JCPOA is a great achievement and helped solve the problem of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction."

Lavrov noted that despite US provocations, Iran is fulfilling its obligations in JCPOA and implements the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Additional Protocol and Safeguards Agreement, which is respected and praised by the international community.

He added: "I cannot imagine the possibility of the US returning to JCPOA, and Washington must answer this question itself."
