In a formal letter to top international bodies, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned recent moves by France, Germany, and the UK to reimpose defunct UN Security Council resolutions, declaring them null and unlawful.

Why it matters:

The letter signals Iran’s response to European maneuvers within the nuclear deal framework, calling their actions a legal breach and an erosion of good faith diplomacy.

What he’s saying:

Araghchi’s letter, addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UN Security Council members, and EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, asserts that the European trio (E3) lacks any legal, political, or moral authority to invoke the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action’s (JCPOA) Dispute Resolution Mechanism (DRM) or revive resolutions terminated by UNSC Resolution 2231.

He argues that the E3 have fundamentally violated their commitments under the JCPOA and UNSC Resolution 2231, and that any recourse to the DRM by these nations is "legally invalid and politically illegitimate." Araghchi underscores that Iran has already completed the DRM process in 2018 following the US withdrawal and the E3’s failure to fulfill economic commitments.

Key points:

  • Iran activated the DRM in 2018, citing the US’s unlawful withdrawal and the E3’s non-performance.
