Following Israel’s controversial plan to forcibly relocate Gaza’s population to Rafah, nearly 60 U.K. MPs have demanded British government formally recognize Palestinian statehood.

Why it matters:

The call from dozens of British lawmakers comes amid rising international outcry over Israel’s ethnic cleansing campaign in Gaza, as the situation escalates toward humanitarian and legal crisis.

What they’re saying:

According to The Guardian, nearly 60 Members of the U.K. Parliament mostly from the Labour Party’s moderate and left wings have sent a letter to Foreign Secretary David Lammy urging immediate action:

“With deep urgency and concern, we write to you regarding Israel Katz’s announcement on Monday, outlining plans to forcibly transfer all Palestinian civilians in Gaza to a camp in the destroyed city of Rafah without allowing them to leave."

They also urged the U.K. government to recognize the State of Palestine immediately and to take steps to prevent the implementation of the forced transfer plan.

Context:

  • The U.K. MPs’ demand follows similar calls from French President Emmanuel Macron and growing criticism from British officials, including the Deputy Foreign Secretary, urging stronger action to stop Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
  • Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7, 2023, has climed over 57,000 Palestinian lives.
