Russia’s Representative to International Organizations says Iran’s move to enrich uranium up to 60% is a reaction taken against enhanced Western pressure and sanctions.

Why it matters:

Russia’s official stance highlights its implicit support for Iran’s nuclear decisions. Iran seeks to have its nuclear program under International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) safeguards and Non-Prolifereation Treaty (NPT).

The big picture:

Iran’s recent increase in uranium enrichment levels is framed as a countermeasure to sanctions and aggressive pressure from the West. Though Iran had full cooperation with IAEA and is a member of NPT, Israel and U.S. attacked Iran targetting nuclear scientists, facilities, and citizens.
