UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese has accused Israel of committing one of the “cruelest genocides in modern history” in Gaza, urging a global arms embargo, the suspension of all trade and investment, and accountability for corporations tied to the Israeli “economy of occupation.”

Why it matters:

Albanese’s explosive remarks at the UN Human Rights Council represent one of the most direct condemnations of Israel by a senior UN official to date.

Her comments come amid mounting global concern over the scale of death and destruction in Gaza, where over 200,000 Palestinians are reported killed or injured, and growing calls for governments and businesses to sever ties with Israeli military and economic interests.

What she's saying:

The situation in the occupied Palestinian territory is apocalyptic,” Albanese told the Council. “Israel is responsible for one of the cruelest genocides in modern history.”

She accused Tel Aviv of turning Gaza into a testing ground for advanced weaponry, describing how arms companies have profited by supplying weapons used to drop more than 85,000 tons of explosives on Gaza, six times the power of the U.S. Nuclear attack on Hiroshima.

She condemned Israel’s so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation as a “death trap,” designed not to aid but to force flight or death among Gaza’s starved and bombarded population.

Albanese asserted that what is happening is not only a human catastrophe but also an economic enterprise fueled by genocide.

She warned: “Weapons and data systems brutalize and surveil Palestinians. Colonies spread, financed by banks and insurers, powered by fossil fuels, and normalized by tourism platforms and academic institutions.”

Key points:

  • According to the report, 48 corporate actors, including Amazon, Microsoft, BNP Paribas, Booking.com, and HD Hyundai, are linked to Israel’s war efforts, contributing to what Albanese describes as a vast “economy of occupation.”
  • She calls for a full arms embargo and global disengagement, including suspending all trade and investment tied to Israel and holding companies accountable.

Go deeper:

Albanese’s report marks a turning point in international discourse on Gaza, highlighting not only state actors but also private sector complicity in human rights violations.

Her framing of Palestine as a "laboratory" for Israeli weapons development connects human rights to global military-industrial dynamics.

The report also aligns with growing grassroots movements pushing for BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) policies worldwide.

As governments hesitate, Albanese shifts the responsibility to citizens, unions, and advocacy groups, warning that “what comes next depends on all of us.”
