Foreign Ministry spokesman condemned US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s statements on Iran’s alleged meddling in Venezuela's internal affairs, describing them as ridiculous.

Iran Press/Iran newsSeyyed Abbas Mousavi  added, “Donald Trump’s US wants to turn Latin America into its backyard like it was in 19th century, oblivious to the fact that the nations have got awake and the wheel of time does not move back.”

While the Iranian experts are engaged in improving water and electricity systems of the country at the request of its government, the US has looted Venezuela’s 30 billion currency reserves, urging them to rise up to the legitimate government or suffer hunger, he said according to Iran Press.

The US move is a flagrant case of interference in Venezuela’s domestic affairs and is doomed, Mousavi said.

Pompeo has claimed that Iran’s presence in southern America is aimed at interfering in the Latin American country's internal affairs.

Venezuela has plunged into political crisis after Juan Guaido, the leader of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, declared himself interim president in January.

Shortly after Guaido took an oath swearing himself in before his supporters, US President Donald Trump recognised him as the country's leader. In response, Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro broke off diplomatic ties with the US and gave American diplomats 72 hours to get out of his country.

Apart from being embroiled in a political crisis, Venezuela has been witnessing blackouts with millions of people going without power in the past weeks.101/202
