DAKAR (IP) - The mourning rituals for the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, took place in central Dakar, Senegal, with hundreds of people from the Shiite community in attendance.

The participants, like their counterparts around the world, commemorated this solemn occasion with deep sorrow and reverence.

Imam Sheikh Yassin, the main speaker, led the prayers and recited verses from the Holy Quran, paying tribute to the entire family of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In an interview with Iran Press, Khalil Hilal, an elderly member of the community and one of the oldest, emphasized the tradition of Ashura mourning among Senegal's Shiite community.

"We have been commemorating Ashura at this sacred place since the early 20th century," Hilal said. "As a believer, this is a very sad day, reflecting on what happened in Karbala, where Imam Hussein and his family were martyred on this day. For 10 days, we have been preparing for today as the last day of the commemoration."

Abdou Saheli, a male believer among the organizers, paid tribute to the grandson of the Prophet (peace be upon him) with tears in his eyes. "On this day, we as a family, we provided everything from buying rams to wheat. We cannot count it. It's just priceless. As Muslims, we should take Imam Hussein as an example of courage and sacrifice. Without his sacrifice, Islam would not have been where it is today. We should thank Allah and remain grateful. I am praying upon his soul on this special day."
Hadijatoul Zayid, another speaker, emphasized the importance of Imam Hussein for Islam. "Without Imam Hussein, who gave his precious life to perpetuate the tradition of his grandfather Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), there would not be Islam as a religion. We owe him everything."

The mourning rituals in Dakar showcased the deep connection and reverence that the Shiite community in Senegal has for Imam Hussein and the sacrifices made by the Prophet's family. The commemoration of Ashura serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of Imam Hussein and the principles of courage, sacrifice, and devotion to Islam.
