Why it matters:
The potential Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolution, backed by European countries and influenced by the U.S. and Israel, just would escalate tensions over Iran’s nuclear program at a time when diplomatic channels remain fragile.
The big picture:
Iran has time and again proved that its nuclear activities remain peaceful and compliant with the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), as the Islamic Republic is one of the signatories. Yet, growing pressure from West mingled with recent reports from the IAEA have renewed scrutiny on Tehran to deprive Iranian nation from their rights, nuclear industry.
What he is saying:
Esmail Baghaei, Spokespman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry: “From the beginning, the Islamic Republic of Iran has based its cooperation with the IAEA on its commitments under the NPT and the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement."
“What is clear — and has been repeatedly stated by the Foreign Ministry and other officials — is that Iran’s nuclear program is entirely peaceful. Even if we take the latest IAEA report, it does not indicate any deviation from peaceful objectives,” he said.
“We have shown goodwill in the past two years with major steps toward cooperation, but unfortunately, the agency, under political pressure from three European countries and the U.S., decided to issue what it calls a comprehensive report — a report that was then exploited to draft a resolution.”
“Without a doubt, a confrontational response will not be met with more cooperation. The Islamic Republic of Iran has prepared a series of steps and actions, and the other side is well aware of our capabilities."
Key points:
- Tehran says it has a detailed response plan ready, should the resolution be passed.
- Officials reject any interpretation that media or expert commentary indicates a shift in Iran’s official nuclear policy.
- Even the latest IAEA report does not allege any military deviation in its nuclear activities.
