US threatens EU with new tariffs on European products

The White House on Monday threatened to impose new tariffs on European products over subsidies to aerospace giant Airbus.

Iran Press/America: The Trump administration has lashed out at Brussels for subsidies received by aerospace giant Airbus. A US official has described growing impatience in Washington, saying: "The time has come for action."

Relations between the US and the European Union have dived under President Donald Trump, in part because of his "America First" policy that emphasizes protectionist policies aimed at shoring up American industry, AFP reported.

The US Trade Representative said: "This case has been in litigation for 14 years, and the time has come for action."

"Our ultimate goal is to reach an agreement with the EU to end all WTO-inconsistent subsidies to large civil aircraft manufacturers. When the EU ends these harmful subsidies, the additional US duties imposed in response can be lifted."

"I think it's very foolish," said Gardner, the US ambassador to the EU from 2014 to 2017. "Guns should be pointed at enemies, not at allies."

"I think it is very damaging and unfortunate," said Silverberg, who held the post from 2008 to 2009.

Serious attack on global trade rules

Gardner said little is now preventing China or any other country from blocking imports on anything, unrelated to true concerns about national security. "It is a serious attack on the world's trading rules because this is clearly something that nobody wants to litigate at the WTO," he said. 103/211
