An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale rocked Aliabad-e-Katul in Iran's Golestan province.

IranPress/Iran: According to the seismological center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred at 3:30 AM hours local time on Saturday in an area located at 21 km from Aliabad-e-Katul, Golestan province of Iran in the depth of 10 kilometres.

There was no immediate report on the possible damage caused by the earthquake.

Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.
