Iran Press/Europe: The American student protest movement began 9 days ago on April 17 at Columbia University in New York; the protesting students called on the university to cut off its relations with the Israeli institutions involved in the war on Gaza.
Protesters angry over Israel’s war on Gaza have gathered at Sorbonne University in Paris, chanting “Free Palestine” at the university’s gates while some students set up tents in the courtyard, Al-Jazeera reported.
Meanwhile, France's state deployed riot police on Tuesday to suppress the protesters and cut funding to quell campus protests over Gaza.
Valerie Pecresse, president of the Ile-de-France region in which Paris is situated, has announced that the region’s funding for Sciences Po Paris will be cut until “serenity and security are restored in the school”.
Still, the protests in Australia were a little bit different as Anadolu News Agency reports; The Jewish Council of Australia has strongly rejected the claims that university encampments in support of Palestinians against Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip are a threat to Jewish students and staff.
Students in Australia established encampments at their universities in solidarity with Palestinians last week.
Stating on Sunday, the council's Executive Director Elizabeth Strakosch called the right to peaceful protest fundamental democratic freedom.
She said: "We should be proud of all of the students, many of whom are Jewish, who are speaking out against this unfolding genocide. The student protests against the unfolding genocide in Gaza are legitimate expressions of political speech and human rights advocacy."
The student movement calls on the universities to stop their cooperation with any company involved in assisting Israel's military war on Gaza.
The number of arrests nationwide has surpassed 900 since April 17.
Since October 7 and the beginning of the all-out Israeli war on Gaza, over 34,500 people have been martyred and over 77,700 others have been wounded, besides dealing with famine and starvation.
