Iran Press/America: Asked if he would be willing to go to Tehran, Pompeo said in an interview with Bloomberg TV on Thursday: “Sure. If that’s the call, I’d happily go there."
Tensions between Iran and the United States have ratcheted up since last year, when President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the United States from the Iranian nuclear deal, formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action JCPOA, saying it was not strong enough. Washington also reimposed very harsh sanctions on Tehran.
The US Secretary of State, whose country pursues a hostile approach and economic terrorism to Iran, claims that he will welcome direct talks with the Iranian people, saying: "... I would welcome the chance to speak directly to the Iranian people."
Pompeo also said that as Jawad Zarif talks to the media in New York, he also wants to get in touch with the media in Tehran.
This is not the first time that US officials claim that they are interested in negotiating with Iran.
US president Donald Trump had previously announced his readiness to negotiate with Iran without any preconditions.
However, Tehran has so far rejected the possibility of dialogue and negotiations with Washington in the face of violations of previous commitments by the United States, in particular on the JCPOA issue, as well as the continuation of the hostile US approach and policy towards Iran.
