Tehran (IP) - The head of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, has issued an urgent warning of an impending famine in northern Gaza, accusing Israel of using hunger as a weapon against the Palestinian people.

Iran Press/West Asia: "Famine is likely occurring in northern Gaza," Lazzarini wrote on his X account on Saturday. "This is man-made."

He went on to state, "Hunger has been weaponized by [Israel]. This deprives people in Gaza of the basics, including food to survive."

Lazzarini highlighted that the aid currently being allowed into Gaza—an average of just over 30 trucks per day—is "not enough." He pointed out that this limited aid constitutes only about "six percent" of Gaza’s daily needs.

Addressing the international community, Lazzarini called for the urgent political will to increase the flow of humanitarian and commercial supplies into Gaza to prevent further hunger and suffering.

His statement comes amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, particularly in the north, which has borne the brunt of the offensive for more than a month. The total death toll in Gaza has surpassed 43,500 since the US-Israeli genocide began in October last year.

This month, Israel formally cut ties with UNRWA, drawing stern warnings from the agency that halting its operations could lead to the collapse of food and humanitarian aid distribution across Gaza.
