The UN Security Council held an urgent meeting Monday afternoon at the request of Russia, as the war in Gaza continued to fan tensions across the Middle East, with potentially dramatic consequences for regional peace and security.

Iran PressAmerica: A UN official expressed concern Monday over the tensions that have engulfed multiple countries in West Asia, which continue to rise.

Rosemary DiCarlo, political deputy of the UN Secretary-General, said in this meeting: The governments of Iraq and Syria condemned the US attacks on these two countries and announced that several civilians were killed in these attacks. The violence in the Middle East has escalated and the Secretary General of the United Nations has called on all parties to avoid leading the region to the abyss. We insist that the high human and economic costs of any possible conflict in the region be considered.

Referring to the developments in Gaza, DiCarlo said: "Most of the victims of the war in the Gaza Strip are women and children, and it is necessary to stop the conflicts and establish a ceasefire in Gaza for" humanitarian reasons. The number of dead in the Gaza Strip has exceeded 27,000 people, "

The UN Political Affairs chief urged the Council to help prevent further escalation and ease tensions across the region.

The UN’s Rosemary DiCarlo, briefed ambassadors first, warning that escalating attacks were fuelling chances of miscalculation.

She said that as everyone in the diplomatic world is all too aware, “the tensions that have engulfed multiple countries in the Middle East continue to rise.”

She said Secretary-General António Guterres had repeatedly warned about the risk of further military escalation “and miscalculation” since the Gaza war set the region aflame.

Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, briefs the Security Council meeting on threats to international peace and security.

“We have witnessed near daily incidents in the region. These include some 165 attacks on United States facilities in Syria and Iraq, prompting US strikes in the two countries," Ms DiCarlo said. 219
