The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter, urging the UN Security Council to act on the war in Gaza.

Iran PressAmerica: Considered the UN’s most powerful body, the 15-member Security Council is tasked with maintaining international peace and security.

More than 16,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the conflict – 70 percent of those killed are women and children according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

According to the UN figures from before the seven-day ceasefire, 80 percent of Gaza’s 2.3 million citizens have been displaced.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday invoked the rarely used Article 99 of the UN Charter to urge the Security Council to avert a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, said his spokesman.

In a rare move, Guterres wrote to the president of the Security Council to demand action, invoking Article 99 of the UN Charter for the first time since he became UN Secretary-General in 2017, expressing grave concerns over the scale of the loss of human lives in Gaza and Israel in a short time.

In response to Guterres’s letter, Security Council member the United Arab Emirates posted on X to say it had submitted a new draft resolution to the council, and “called for a humanitarian ceasefire resolution to be adopted urgently”.
