Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said his country’s forces are continuing to advance into Russian territory after their surprise offensive. The Ukrainian forces established a military command in Kursk.

Iran PressEurope: A daring Ukrainian military push into Russia’s Kursk region has seen Kyiv’s forces seize scores of villages, take hundreds of prisoners and force the evacuation of tens of thousands of civilians in what has become the largest attack on the country since World War II.

The regions of Kursk, Bryansk, and Belgorod in Russia share a 1,160-kilometer (720-mile) border with Ukraine, including a 245-kilometer (152-mile) stretch in the Kursk region. Before Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022, this border had minimal protection. Since then, there have been enhancements such as checkpoints on key roads and field fortifications in certain areas, but establishing robust defenses has proven to be a challenging endeavor.

The most proficient Russian units are currently engaged in eastern Ukraine, where they have been conducting offensives in multiple sectors, resulting in gradual yet consistent progress. Moscow has utilized these regions to carry out airstrikes and missile attacks on Ukrainian territory, although it lacks sufficient ground forces in the area.

Russia’s drones, surveillance equipment and intelligence assets are focused in eastern Ukraine, helping Kyiv to covertly pull its troops to the border under the cover of deep forests.
