Iran Press/America: Venezuela’s opposition can prove that Edmundo González won Sunday’s election, according to María Corina Machado, who led the campaign against President Nicolás Maduro.
She told supporters at her party’s campaign headquarters on Monday evening that the opposition has enough of the “acts,” or voting tabulations to prove they won the election.
Hundreds of Venezuelans took to the streets of Caracas to protest what they say is Maduro’s fraudulent win. González, who stood alongside Machado, said that while he understands people’s anger, calm is needed. He said the will of the people, expressed in Sunday’s vote, will be respected. Protests had already started to wind down at that point.
“Venezuela wants peace and recognition of the will and expression of the people,” González said. “That is why it is essential that the authorities respect that will, we expressed in the ballot box.”
Before announcing the results of the Venezuelan elections, Javier Milei, the president of Argentina, announced that he would not accept Maduro's victory in these elections.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States has “serious concerns” about the veracity of an announcement by Venezuela’s election authority that President Nicolás Maduro won the country’s closely-watched presidential election.
“We have seen the announcement just a short while ago by the Venezuelan Electoral Commission,” Blinken said after the country’s electoral authority said the incumbent had secured 51 percent of the vote when exit polls had projected a decisive win by his rival Edmundo González. “We have serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people.”
