IP - The Council of Europe Voices Alarm Over Widespread Racism in Italy.

Iran Press/Europe: According to the RTBF website, the Council of Europe issued a warning on Tuesday about the rise of racist and xenophobic rhetoric in public forums in Italy, urging Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to implement an anti-racism program.

Following a five-year investigation into human rights conditions in Italy, the European Commission has released a report condemning racism in the country. The report expresses concern over the rise in xenophobia, particularly in public and political discourse, and the use of divisive and hostile language towards refugees and migrants in Italy.

The European Commission expressed regret that discriminatory remarks by Italian officials are seldom challenged, noting that while the number of Roma living in camps has decreased significantly, their forced evictions, in contravention of international law, have not ceased.

The report states that many undocumented migrants in Italy face labor exploitation but rarely report such abuses out of fear of deportation.

The European Commission's report emphasizes the necessity for Italian authorities to establish an independent body to combat racial discrimination. Since Giorgia Meloni's rise to power, Italy has adopted a stringent immigration policy.
