IP- The deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus should be seen as a response to the unfriendly actions of the West, Belarusian Security Council State Secretary Alexander Volfovich said on Thursday.

Iran PressEurope: On Thursday, Belarusian Security Council State Secretary Alexander Volfovich stated that the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus should be viewed as a response to the unfriendly actions of the West. "We are taking measures, including as part of the deterrence system.

Of course, first and foremost with our strategic partner, the Russian Federation, as well as with our historical partners: colleagues in the Collective Security Treaty and the CIS. Hence, the decision of the presidents of Belarus and Russia to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on our country's territory.

Unfortunately, this is a necessary step aimed at cooling down hot-headed Western politicians," he said at a meeting of the Council of Heads of Security and Special Services of CIS countries.

The official also mentioned that "Poland has been harboring the same intention for two years now" and is urging NATO to place nuclear weapons in their country.

On March 25th, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would deploy its tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus at their request, just as the United States has been doing on its allies' territory.

The president stated that Moscow plans to complete the construction of a special storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus by July 1st. On May 25th, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced that Russia had already begun transferring nonstrategic nuclear weapons from Russia to Belarus.
