Türkiye braced Monday for its first election runoff after a night of high drama showed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan edging ahead of his rival but failing to secure a first-round win.

Iran PressAsia: Figures from the Anadolu state news agency showed Erdogan picking up 49.4 percent of the vote.

Opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu was trailing by 45.0 percent -- a disappointing outcome after late pre-election polls showed him in the lead.

Sinan Ogan, the third presidential candidate of the nationalist Ancestral Alliance (ATA), only got 5.23 percent of the total vote.

Votes are still being counted.

More than 64 million people, including 3.4 million overseas voters, were eligible to vote.

Türkiye is set for a runoff presidential election on 28 May.

Voters also elected lawmakers to fill Türkiye's 600-seat parliament, which lost much of its legislative power after Erdogan's executive presidency. The opposition has promised to return Türkiye's governance system to a parliamentary democracy if it wins both the presidential and parliamentary ballots.

Anadolu news agency said Erdogan's ruling party alliance was hovering around 49.3%, while Kilicdaroglu's Nation Alliance had around 35.2% and support for a pro-Kurdish party stood above 10%.
