Türkiye is showing a keen interest in joining BRICS, according to Dmitry Birichevsky, the Head of the Department of Economic Cooperation at the Russian Foreign Ministry, in an interview with TV BRICS.

Iran PressEurope: "Indonesia is showing great interest in partnership with BRICS, although it has not joined yet. And, as far as we know, Türkiye is eyeing BRICS with great interest," he said.

 The diplomat said. "Türkiye's members are totally equal and have to take each other’s interests and attitudes into account. I’m sure that the extended version of BRICS will retain this approach."

The 15th BRICS summit took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, under the chairmanship of South Africa from August 22-24. It was a significant meeting of the global south's heads of state and governments in recent years. According to sources, Indonesia was initially considered for membership but was not accepted. However, later on, it was reported that the summit participants agreed to welcome full membership of the Argentine Republic, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates starting from January 1, 2024.

They also tasked their foreign ministers to develop the BRICS partner country model further, compile a list of prospective partner countries, and report by the next summit that will be held in the Russian city of Kazan.
