Nearly a month after South Korea plunged into political unrest following the declaration of martial law by the impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol, the acting president, Han Duck-soo, now faces impeachment for refusing to sign parliamentary bills targeting Yoon.

Iran Press/Asia:  According to a report by NHK, South Korea’s opposition Democratic Party has submitted an impeachment motion against Han Duck-soo, who assumed the role of acting president after Yoon’s suspension.

With a parliamentary majority, the opposition party is expected to pass the motion with ease during Friday’s session. While impeaching the president requires a two-thirds majority in South Korea’s 300-seat National Assembly, the opposition party, holding 170 seats, can pass impeachment motions against cabinet ministers without such a threshold.

Kim Chan-dae, the opposition leader, criticized Han, claiming he lacks the competence to serve as acting president and shows no commitment to upholding the country’s constitution.

This development marks a continuation of the political crisis that has gripped South Korea, with the impeachment process further intensifying tensions in the country.
