IP - One day after more than 100 people were killed in the Bangladesh nationwide protests, Sheikh Hasina fled the Prime Minister's palace on Monday after huge crowds of Bangladeshi protesters stormed her palace in Dhaka demanding she quit power.

Iran Press/Asia: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday resigned and fled the country by an Army helicopter. Her departure ended 15 years of being in power.

Bangladesh Army Chief, Waker-Uz-Zaman confirming the report said that an interim government will soon be formed with the army's support and said that he will take full responsibility.

The army chief also appealed to citizens to stop violence and pledged to return peace to the country. 

He said he would talk to the president to form the interim government and had held talks with the main opposition parties and civil society members - but not Hasina's Awami League.

Bangladesh local news outlets reported that huge crowds of people were running into the premier's official residence in the capital, celebrating and waving flags.

Protesters seized the Prime Minister's office without any resistance from police and military forces.

A source close to the embattled leader said she had left her palace in the capital for a safer place.

Media reports said she had flown in a military helicopter with her sister and was headed to the eastern Indian state of West Bengal just across the border. Another report said she was headed to India’s northeastern state of Tripura.
